Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME universal domain extension is the only one intended for personal web pages only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. At first, just 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to acquire john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken 3rd-level domain names remained active.
